Lauren Phillips is the first woman to join the ranks of the city's firefighters in 30 years.

Lauren Phillips was sworn in as a firefighter in Cleveland last week along with 18 other cadets, all men.

Phillips, whose grandfather was a Cleveland firefighter, is the first woman to join the force in 30 years, according to News 5 Cleveland.

She carried a picture of her grandpa in her back pocket during the ceremony.

Nationally, only about 4 percent of professional firefighters are women, according to the Department of Labor.

“If I can inspire [and] motivate women and young girls, that is a total bonus to the job,” Phillips told Cleveland 19 News.
