Joy Ryan had never seen the ocean or climbed a mountain. So her grandson, Brad, took her on the road.

The pair, which has thus far visited 29 of the 61 national parks in the United States, was recently featured on CBS This Morning.

“Just because I’m old doesn’t mean I can’t do anything,” Joy, of Duncan Falls, Ohio, told CBS.

A widow who has outlived two of her three sons, Joy has never let her losses define her, said Brad, a wildlife veterinarian at the National Zoo in Washington, D.C.

“A lot of people move through their tragedy with a darkness about them, and she has never shown that.”

Joy said, “Someone asked me, ‘Why do you smile all the time?’ and I said, ‘Would you rather I be an old grump?'”
