From grandfather to granddaughter, lessons in cooking and life

Celebrated chef Jacques Pépin started teaching his granddaughter, Shorey Wesen, to cook eleven years ago, when she was two. Recently, they created a video series and a cookbook for other families who want to spend time in the kitchen together.

Each of the 36 free videos features a recipe, such as hummus with feta and sunflower seeds, or a concept, such as setting the table.

“There is no place as sacred as the kitchen, I feel, for a child,” says Pépin, 82, who also taught his daughter, Shorey’s mother, to cook.

Shorey, he says, is “a precocious, intelligent, and funny girl.”

“We love cooking together. And what we want to show people mostly is what’s important in life.”
